Abuela - Grandmother
“La Señora” as everyone calls her, is the mother of one of the directors of Arena y Esteras. She lives on the first floor of the house across from the theater. She is from la provincia (the country) and she and her sisters were orphaned as children. After a few years in an orphanage there, an aunt showed up and brought them to Villa el Salvador. She was schooled by nuns in a Catholic school. She calls me “Amañita” and tells me “Que dios te bendica” – that god may bless me – every time she sees me. She is also fiercely proud of her son’s work and otherwise spends most of her time guarding the house (every time someone passes by she peeks out to see who it is and what they are up to) and watering the tree by the front door.
